Dearest readers,
The other day her ladyship woke to find the first--and no doubt the only--hard frost she will have to endure this winter. She at last bent to the demands of the season and put on a sweater when she walked out to get her morning paper. Then she retreated back inside, set a pot of vegetable soup on the stove to simmer, and spent a glorious day re-arranging her bookshelves. She had decided, on a whim, to sort her fiction by continent--or perhaps by culture, with a view towards giving her beloved Russian novelists more shelf space.
She also decided that “southern fiction” deserved a case all of its own. The South is, after all, a country unto itself.

So the first thing her ladyship did was to go through her shelves and pull out any novel set in the South, and stack them neatly on her large library table. This turned out to be something of a mistake, because now, while the library is in the process of being moved around, her ladyship must sit here surround by piles of wonderful southern books. Do you know how hard it is to get any work done under these circumstances? It would be like expecting a paparazzi photographer to ignore Jennifer Love Hewitt walking by with a baby stroller.
So, her ladyship’s day now goes something like this: Work for a couple hours…get distracted in the middle of writing an email by the ancient copy of Michael Malone’s Time’s Witness. Rein herself in, go back to work, then thirty minutes later pick up Bret Lott’s Eyes to See…get lost in the book for awhile, then shake herself and determinedly set the book down. Work work work. She makes little rules for herself, like “I will not pick up another book until I need to make more coffee.” But struck by a sudden memory of a story, she reaches for one anyway.

It’s been impossible to get any work done, but her ladyship, the editor feels that she has the best of excuses.
Happy Reading!

her ladyship, the editor

Noteworthy poetry and prose from her ladyship's bedside reading stack.
Jumping the trains
Every time I go to jump on a steam train as it chugs its way through Rowlesburg--
Every time I throw out my hands to grab the rusty metal rungs and haul myself up onto the side of one of them black coal cars, hoisting my knees up over its churning, screeching wheels--
Every single time I jump on a train--my heart thumps even noisier in my ears than the clanking of the old iron horse I’m hopping up onto. I love steam trains. I love living in a town that’s chock-full of ‘em. I love being on ‘em, being anywhere near ‘em. They’re as much a part of my life around here as the mountains. Or breathing.
But it’s a dangerous business, hopping a ride onto a moving train. First off, there’s always a right decent chance of getting killed. Second, and about ten thousand times worse, my father might find out.

Literary News & Gossip passed along from the readers, the writers, the reviewers, the resellers, the riff raff, and dutifully repeated here by her ladyship (who falls into the last category).
Here is the librarian fantasy you were promised: seductive turn of the century furniture cushioning the tenderly derobed rumps of plucky young literary babes. The strip-readers leave no detail ignored and take great care to glam up what's left, filtering their pin-up hair and make-up through the dancing flicker of candlelight. Some will wear high heels. John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children's literature: “The One and Only Ivan,” written by Katherine Applegate, is the 2013 Newbery Medal winner. The book is published by HarperCollins Children’s Books, a division of HarperCollins Publishers. Three Newbery Honor Books also were named: “Splendors and Glooms” by Laura Amy Schlitz and published by Candlewick Press; “Bomb: The Race to Build—and Steal—the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon” by Steve Sheinkin and published by Flash Point, an imprint of Roaring Brook Press; and “Three Times Lucky” by Sheila Turnage and published by Dial Books for Young Readers, a division of Penguin Young Readers Group. Then I quite by accident developed affection for a man from Arkansas, and all of a sudden, the South rushed into my life in a swarm of realities. I was stymied by some of his family's accepted behavioral norms, as I'm sure they were by my own — for one thing, I do not usually hug people I know goodnight every single night, and apparently there are people who do. Deen is not turning his back on his mother’s famous way of cooking; rather he is endeavoring to make it more in line with an active lifestyle and to reflect his own personal commitment to exercise and healthy eating. “I set out to find the major culprits in Southern cooking and dial back some of the bad things so that you can eat it as part of a healthier lifestyle,” It’s not always about the butter 9780345536631
Remember that the South—and this is what people forget—the South is sixteen states and it’s the biggest region. It and the West are enormous country. Of the sixteen states, from Texas on up to Virginia, there is a stamp that means love of language and stories. But that might be the extent of the similarities. Texas lit is nothing like Virginia lit. The Tidelands is nothing like Appalachian. We’re talking about an enormous nation. Barry Hannah on Southern Literature 9780802145505

When Emöke B’Racz, owner of Malaprop’s, travels and visits other bookstores, she is looking to get a feel for the store and the town as a whole. This naturally flows from her business “spirit” that inextricably connects Malaprop’s and Asheville. It is her intention that Malaprop’s emulate and enhance the energy of Asheville’s community, without which Malaprop’s would not exist. The vision to which B’Racz has always remained true is that Malaprop’s has to be good enough for her and for Asheville. If it’s good enough for Emoke, it’s good enough for Asheville

Out of the Easy by Ruth Sepetys
“My introduction to New Orleans actually came through a vintage pair of opera glasses someone gave me for my birthday. They were engraved and dated as a gift for someone named Willie.”
Josie, the 17-year-old daughter of a French Quarter prostitute, is striving to escape 1950 New Orleans and enroll at prestigious Smith College when she becomes entangled in a murder investigation, in this eagerly anticipated follow-up to "Between Shades of Gray." 9780399256929

Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys
It's 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street.
Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test.
With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel "Between Shades of Gray, " Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny.

Code of the Forest by Jon Buchan. A powerful environmental and legal thriller set in South Carolina, and the best part is it's a debut novel. So we hope to hear a lot more from Mr. Buchan in the future. Several reviews compare this novel to the early works of John Grisham, but we think it's even better. 9780984107353
A Good American by Alex George. Yet another amazing debut novel, a family saga about immigration and the American experience that spans most of the 20th century. Sally flipped for this one, and you (and your book club) will too. 9780425253175
The Cove by Ron Rash. Ron Rash of course is a Park Road favorite; his intense novels with their spare poetic language resonate with many readers, including all of our staff. The Cove is now in paperback, and would be a great book club combo with #7 in our list, since both deal with the classic elemental story of a stranger coming to town. 9780061804205
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Ms. Flynn's first two novels sold well for us, but nothing could have prepared us for her latest, Gone Girl. We could barely keep it in stock. It was a huge bestseller nationwide, with many weeks at the top of the New York Times bestseller list. My sales rep and bookseller friends have all been asking, "Have you read it yet?" I haven't but I will soon. A dark, disturbing, twisty thriller that will have you reading far past your bedtime. 9780753827666
A Land More Kind Than Home by Wiley Cash. Yet another stunning debut (2012 was a good year for debut novelists), a literary thriller about evil and redemption in a small North Carolina town. If you haven't read this yet, well, what are you waiting for? 9780062088239
Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver. Ms Kingsolver rarely disappoints, and her latest was one of the staff's favorites of the year. It features the unforgettable image of an entire hillside that seems at first to be on fire, but is really covered with millions of butterflies. As always, the author combines environmental activism with a deeply personal narrative.
Heading Out to Wonderful by Robert Goolrick. This was one of my favorites of the year, and not because I work for the publisher. Another "stranger comes to town" story, every bit as dark and sly as Goolrick's previous novel, the bestselling A Reliable Wife. 9781616202798
Freeman by Leonard Pitts. Mr. Pitts is one of my favorite columnists, and his gripping novel of the post-Civil War South is superbly written. A few months after Lincoln's assassination, runaway slave Sam leaves his safe haven of Philadelphia on a desperate mission to find his wife and son whom he left 15 years earlier. Historical fiction at its finest. 9781932841640
Man in the Blue Moon by Michael Morris. Michael is a favorite of ours--he's almost supernaturally nice--and a perennial Park Road Books bestseller. Yet another story of a stranger coming to a small Southern town, and in Morris's able hands, it comes to life. A lovely story of faith and forgiveness. 9781414368429
Round House by Louise Erdrich. National Book Award winner. I have not read this one, but everything I've ever read by Ms. Erdrich has been powerfully affecting. An Ojibwe woman, Geraldine, is savagely attacked, and her son must find the truth of what happened. Literary fiction doesn't get much better than this.
The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock. This odd, violent novel weaves together disparate strands, like a pair of serial killers, crooked politicians, and a crazed preacher--dark, heady stuff, but it became a favorite of our staff. 9780099563389
Winter of the World by Ken Follett. Our staff and many of our customers love Ken Follett's sprawling historical novels. This is part 2 of a trilogy and covers World War 2 and the dawn of the Atomic Age.
The 13th Target by Mark DeCastrique. Mark is an old friend of the store, and his books always sell very well for us. This intricate thriller features Russell Mullins, former Secret Service agent, who is drawn into a national financial conspiracy. 9781590586174
Yellow Birds by Kevin Powers. Sally and many Southeastern booksellers loved this superb novel of the Iraq War circa 2005. The characters, primarily two young men unprepared for war and their sergeant, come to brilliant life. Yet another debut novel, and we look forward to more from Mr. Powers.
The Invisible Ones by Stef Penney. Sally really loved Ms. Penney's first novel The Tenderness of Wolves. Her sophomore effort is quite different but no less excellent. This ones a tricky mystery set in England in the 80s involving Gypsies that, as Publisher's Weekly says, has "two truly shocking twists at the story's end."
