{On being in violation of the Southern Lady Code.}

In which it is generally acknowledged that it is a good time to be an independent bookstore, that one cannot be ladylike in the middle of a war, and her ladyship, the editor discovers she is in violation of the Southern Lady Code for bringing a bottle of wine to a supper party. She is duly mortified.

Dearest Readers

The South's best bookstoresSouthern Living Magazine recently published it's always-eagerly awaited "Best of the South" issue -- best southern towns, best bars, best bbq joints, and naturally, best southern bookstores. Alas, to see the list you'll have to buy the magazine, since it isn't available the Southern Living website yet. This explains why for the past couple weeks her ladyship, the editor's inbox and social media have been bubbling with posts from booksellers with photos of the magazine opened up to their store's listing.

One thing you can find online, however, is a short list of some of their "favorite" bookstores along with --- and this is the salient point -- a "must read" recommendation.

As Mr. Rick Bragg once said about shopping at independent bookstores -- "it's not what you come in for, it's what you come across."

How to Be the Best Guest

Everyone appreciates a hostess with the mostest, but a hostess with the mostest appreciates the Best Guest.

The Best Guest arrives on time and, from the moment she walks through the front door, spews compliments like a sprinkler.

She says, "Oh my word, look at the dining room table! That centerpiece looks like something out of Barbra Streisand's wet dream! Did you bedazzle those two dozen pinecones yourself? You did! Did you take a class for that? You didn't! You could have your own craft show. And, just so you know: your outfit is everything."

The Best Guest does not then hand off a bottle of wine like a relay baton because the hostess has already taken great pains to pick wine for the night. Nor, for the same reason, does she push her homemade cookies.

She has already sent flowers that morning. She spends as much as she would spend on a nice supper. Yes, including alcohol and tax.

Recommended reading from Southern Indie Booksellers

Like Lions by Brian Panowich
Like the writing of David Joy or Taylor Brown? Then you'll want to check out Brian Panowich. Panowich's Southern crime fiction is so very entertaining. Despite being sheriff, Clayton Burroughs is also the last living son of the Bull Mountain crime family which means everyone wants a piece of him. You'll find yourself rooting for the good guys who may actually be bad guys. Don't let Panowich's epilogue sneak up on you in this one. It's mind-blowing.

Like Lions by Brian Panowich ($26.99*, Minotaur Books), recommended by Avid Bookshop, Athens, GA.

 A Spring 2019 Okra Pick

Extraordinary Birds by Sandy Stark-McGinnis
An extraordinary debut novel full of heart and hope. December’s love of birds and search for her real home will stick with readers long after finish the book. Stark-McGinnis paints a beautiful tale of identity and healing, reminding us that the family we’re born into isn’t necessarily the one you need, and that to find yourself sometimes means finding the people who make you feel like you’re finally home.

Extraordinary Birds by Sandy Stark-McGinnis ($16.99*, Bloomsbury Children's Books), recommended by Bookmarks, Winston-Salem, NC.

The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth
Family relationships are often complicated and misunderstood especially between mother and daughter in laws, but do they usually end in murder? This is the question to be answered in Hepworth's masterfully plotted novel of families and expectations each has of the other. Lucy yearns for a mother figure since her mother died when she was young. Diana seems to be the total opposite of what Lucy hoped for in a mother-in-law. Lucy begins to believe that Diana doesn't even like her at all. When Diana, a prominent and very wealthy member of the community is found dead of an apparent suicide and the police begin to believe foul play we finally see the characters as they really are. Did Diana finally push Lucy too far? Perfect for fans of Liane Moriarty.

The Mother-in-Law by Sally Hepworth ($27.99*, St. Martin's Press), recommended by Fiction Addiction, Greenville, SC.

Recommended forthcoming books from Southern Indie Booksellers

The books you see on the the bookstore shelves may have just been published, but the booksellers who put them there probably read them months ago. Read, reviewed, and talked about with their bookseller friends and colleagues. Below are some of the books coming out next month they are really looking forward to. You won't find them on the shelves just yet, but pre-orders are always welcome.

RecursionRecursion 6/11/2019
"Fast-paced and intelligent thriller that proves an interesting look at the consequence of time travel. Great characters and a page-turner plot make this an easy go-to summer read recommendation." -- Dwan Dawson-Tape, Sundog Books, Santa Rosa, FL

Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged GlorySomeone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory 6/11/2019
"I didn't know I could feel so much through so many different stories and writing styles, but that's exactly what Raphael Bob-Waksberg has done to me with "Someone Who Will Love You in All Your Damaged Glory". Each story has its own air of honest individualism and flowing through each one of Bob-Waksberg's tales is like having waves crash into you, one after the other. If you've seen Bob-Waksberg's show "Bojack Horseman" you will absolutely adore his writing in this smorgasbord of short stories. " -- Delany Holcomb, Bookmarks, Winston-Salem, NC

The Strawberry ThiefThe Strawberry Thief 7/9/2019
"If you ever read Chocolat or saw the movie you will surely want to read this sequel. Ten years have passed and Vivianne is still in the same village but she has another daughter, Rosette, who is special, in ways that other people don’t always understand. Harris helps us renew old acquaintances from the past and charms us as we discover the future. A lovely story and a wonderful revisiting of all the people I came to love in the first novel plus a few new interesting characters that show up to make life more intriguing. Love this story!" -- Stephanie Crowe, Page & Palette, Fairhope, AL

Late MigrationsLate Migrations 7/9/2019
"A blend of memoir, nature writing, and poetry, Renkl beautifully observes and captures what it is to live, love, and lose, whether you are a mother or a daughter; a bluebird or a monarch butterfly" -- Gaël LeLamer, Books & Books, Coral Gables, FL

The Nickel BoysThe Nickel Boys 7/16/2019
"THE NICKEL BOYS is a compelling tale about race issues and cruelty in the deep south, and about keeping secrets and rising above yourself. I couldn’t put it down. This is the kind of book that’ll grow on you–you start reading and you don’t really know what’s going on, but you’re hooked anyway. You have to get to the next page, the next chapter, and before you know it you’ve accidentally gotten to the end and you’re not sure what time it is or where your day went. It’s a good, solid read addressing race issues from the 60's to today, told through the crucible of the Dozier school for boys. I thoroughly enjoyed it." -- Lizy Coale, Copperfish Books, Punta Gorda, FL

"Yes, this book of essays is absolutely hilarious and full of Southern witticisms and peculiarities, but it is also highly intelligent. I loved Helen Ellis's short story collection American Housewife and these essays dig into the wonder and weirdness of her real life with the same zeal." --Johanna Albrecht, McIntyre's Books, Pittsboro, NC

Southern Lady Code by Helen Ellis
The bestselling author of American Housewife is back with a fiercely funny collection of essays on marriage and manners, thank-you notes and three-ways, ghosts, gunshots, gynecology, and the Calgon-scented, onion-dipped, monogrammed art of living as a Southern Lady.

Helen Ellis has a mantra: "If you don't have something nice to say, say something not-so-nice in a nice way." Say "weathered" instead of "she looks like a cake left out in the rain." Say "early-developed" instead of "brace face and B cups." And for the love of Coke Salad, always say "Sorry you saw something that offended you" instead of "Get that stick out of your butt, Miss Prissy Pants." In these twenty-three raucous essays Ellis transforms herself into a dominatrix Donna Reed to save her marriage, inadvertently steals a $795 Burberry trench coat, witnesses a man fake his own death at a party, avoids a neck lift, and finds a black-tie gown that gives her the confidence of a drag queen. While she may have left her home in Alabama, married a New Yorker, forgotten how to drive, and abandoned the puffy headbands of her youth, Helen Ellis is clinging to her Southern accent like mayonnaise to white bread, and offering readers a hilarious, completely singular view on womanhood for both sides of the Mason-Dixon.
