{To build up a library is to create a life.}

In which Mr. Tim Poland considers fly fishing a sport for poetry, Mr. Charles Willeford declines to dance for the establishment, and Mr. Jon Mayes tours bookseller libraries of the South, the lucky devil.

Dearest Readers

To build up a library is to create a life. It’s never just a random collection of books. –Carlos María Domínguez

Admit it. How often have you walked into somebody's home and immediately started assessing their bookshelves? Her ladyship admits she does this all the time: What books are on the shelves? Which ones has she read? Which ones does she want to read? Which ones does she want to steal?

Mitchell Kaplan's home libraryHer ladyship's readers will be relieved to hear that to date she has managed to resist the temptation to follow a life of book crime, assuaging her bookish-magpie inclinations by keeping lists of the books she covets from other people's shelves.

Nevertheless, her ladyship finds other people's bookshelves irresistible, which is why she is always clicking on those links of "most beautiful libraries in the world" or "writing places of 15 famous authors" or "12 tiny bookstores you have to visit", etc, etc.

Or how about "Bookseller homes"? Mr. Jon Mayes, who traveled extensively throughout South from bookstore to bookstore as the sales rep for Perseus Books and Publishers Group West until he recently retired, also kept an ongoing blog of his travels and close encounters of a literary kind called Advance Reading Copy.

The Kornegay home libraryAnd among other things, offers tours of the homes of the booksellers and writers who let him in the door. Most recently, Mr. Britton Trice, the owner of Garden District Bookshop in New Orleans. But one can take a stroll through the rooms of Mitchell Kaplan (Books & Books in Coral Gables), or wander through the lovely home of Jamie and Kelly Kornegay (Turnrow Books, Greenwood, MS) or browse the special collections of Emoke B'Racz (Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe, Asheville NC).

Emoke's libraryOf course, there are many other things to admire (or envy, or covet). Her ladyship finds herself oddly charmed that Mr. Mitchell Kaplan has a Fruit Crate Label collection, and she nearly wept at the stained glass windows in Mr. Kornegay's dining room. But in the end, her ladyship finds herself zooming the photos up in an attempt to read the titles on the shelves. Booksellers always have the best home libraries.

And in keeping with the subject, here is her own, her lack of attention to housekeeping rather on display along with the books:

Bluff CityAlthea

You do a lot of thinking in jail. Especially when you’re locked in the box that’s your cell. Mine is about as big as the walk-in closet I had back at home, but in place of leather bags and slingbacks and racks of clothes, I’ve got bunk beds, a stainless-steel sink-and-toilet combo, and a compact, padlocked cabinet. The cabinet’s where you keep your valuables, like family pictures, commissary, and letters, including the one from your daughter that’s not addressed to you The letter that, truth be told, you just can’t bring yourself to read, so you’ve got it tucked inside the Bible that belonged to your dead mother.

The Bible’s the one thing you read religiously, but not for scripture. You read it for the notes written in the margins. Then, when it’s lights out and you can’t read anymore, you lock the Bible up in the cabinet and crawl in your bunk. The top bunk, which you’re still scared of falling out of. You’d still be in the bottom bunk, if it was up to you, but your new crazy-quiet cellmate asked for that bunk in a way that made you feel like she might kill you as you slept on it, if you said no.

Now you lie here, wide awake, with the compact cabinet across the way and the sink-and-toilet combo near the foot of the bed, thinking and remembering because that’s all you’ve got here in the dark when sleep won’t come. And it hardly ever comes. I’m usually up thinking about getting out or what it was like before I came in or why I did what I did and how what I did compares to the next woman’s crime.

It’s always me versus Inmate X: I did this, but at least I didn’t do that.

Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli
A heady yet accessible exploration of family and America's collective past that reaches into a variety of texts and art forms for inspiration. But it's the ambition of Luiselli's writing and its overall impact that makes this novel such a monument.

Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli ($27.95*, Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli), recommended by Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe, Asheville, NC.

Watching You by Lisa Jewell
The picturesque painted houses at the top the of the street hide a delicate web of past and present intrigue. Complicated relationships abound: sisters and brothers, teacher and student, innocent love and the timeless theme of marital infidelity, and of course, a murder. Jewell's understating of human psyche and its idiosyncrasies makes for a deliciously hard to put down whodunnit that feels all too close to home. She is a story-weaver like no other and she had me guessing the whole way through.

Watching You by Lisa Jewell ($26.00*, Atria Books), recommended by The Oxford Exchange, Tampa, FL.

Crescendo by Paola Quintavalle, Alessandro Sanna (Artist)
In Crescendo, Quintavalle and Sanna tap into the improbable magic of growing a child--impending motherhood calls for so much wonder and mystery at the little one you have yet to meet, and this joyful, colorful ode hits all the right notes. A perfect gift for any mother, new, old, or yet-to-be!

Crescendo by Paola Quintavalle, Alessandro Sanna (Artist) ($19.95*, Enchanted Lion Books), recommended by Avid Bookshop, Athens, GA.

The Okra Picks: The winter season

Make a New Year’s Resolution to read more Okra! Southern Independent booksellers have chosen the 2019 Winter Okra Picks – a collection of the best forthcoming Southern books of the season. Add a bit of tasty reading to your literary diet. Serve yourself a helping of Okra Picks.

"I had the worst, most amazing book hangover after finishing this one. The Butler women crawled into my heart and made it impossible for me to leave. Gray's writing made each character distinct and so real for me that in the middle I had to put it down and take a breather. This book will have you calling your mom, your sister, your aunt just to tell them you love them."
--Faith, Page 158 Books, Wake Forest, NC

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa GrayThe Mothers meets An American Marriage in this dazzling debut novel about mothers and daughters, identity and family, and how the relationships that sustain you can also be the ones that consume you.

The Butler family has had their share of trials—as sisters Althea, Viola, and Lillian can attest—but nothing prepared them for the literal trial that will upend their lives.

Althea, the eldest sister and substitute matriarch, is a force to be reckoned with and her younger sisters have alternately appreciated and chafed at her strong will. They are as stunned as the rest of the small community when she and her husband Proctor are arrested, and in a heartbeat the family goes from one of the most respected in town to utter disgrace. The worst part is, not even her sisters are sure exactly what happened.

As Althea awaits her fate, Lillian and Viola must come together in the house they grew up in to care for their sister’s teenage daughters. What unfolds is a stunning portrait of the heart and core of an American family in a story that is as page-turning as it is important.
