{In praise of black-eyed peas.}

In which Ms. Cassandra King remembers a sea change in her life, Mr. Pete Mock speculates on the man behind the authorial mask, and Mr. Michael W. Twitty explains why we eat black-eyed peas on New Year's. There is more to it than you think.

Black-eyed peas

"Every times my grandmother opened her purse," remembers Mr. Michael Twitty, "black-eyed peas would spill out along with her wishbones and bits of roots, to my mother's great embarrassment." As carriers of good luck and protection against disaster, a handful of black-eyed peas seemed a frail and ineffective charm. And yet, when his mother died many years later, Mr. Twitty discovered black-eyed peas in her purse. "In the old religion," he says, "the ancestors are never far away."

Her ladyship, the editor, did not herself grow up with the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, but it is one of the Southern customs she has found easy to adopt. For one thing, she loves black-eyed peas. A tradition that requires one to eat them can't be called a hardship. And while the tradition has not notably guaranteed one to be showered with piles of cash in the upcoming year, eating a bowl of black-eyed peas and greens, seasoned with a dash of hot pepper sauce, seems on the whole a better way to honor the incoming year than such "traditions" as were popular in her own part of the country: namely, standing on a street corner in the middle of the night, freezing, getting smashed while waiting for a lightbulb-encrusted metal ball to drop 150 feet.

Somehow, a tradition that symbolizes good fortune and vitality, that was honored by our mothers and grandmothers and great-great-great mothers, just makes more sense.

Happy New Year.

The Cooking Gene

Dictated by the old religion, black-eyed peas were eaten on New Year's Day, along with the heads of things, with greens for cash and peas for change. Nobody knew that in Kongo, greens symbolized life and vitality, even as the Creoles added new greens to their gumbo zberbes, each one representing a new friend in the year to come. The Manding call the cowpea "soso." and the Wolof call them "nyebe." An ancient staple of the diet in the Senegambia and its hinterlands, the black-eyed pea grows well in hot, drought-conducive conditions and is a symbol of resilience, mercy, and kindness. Nyebe are the kind of cooked food one gives as sadaka--righteously given charity--to beggars on the streets of Senegal.

Black-eyed peas represent fertility, the eye of God, and they are associated with the force of change and wind, the Yoruba goddess Oya. They were a spiritually potent food long before our arrival in America. Leftover peas are even used to repair the cracks in the outer walls of the great mosques of old Mali. "Black-eyed pea" in Yoruba is "ewa." Change the tone and it's the word for "beauty" and the the word for "tradition." To ingest black-eyed peas is to become filled with beauty, and ancestral tradition.

The Price You Pay by Aidan Truhen
So, there I was, reading this book by Aiden Truhen, a pseudonym for a previously published author, and wondering who it could be. James Ellroy , maybe? The prose is tight, terse and Jack Price, our narrator, has qualities, a brash assholeishness about him that reminded me of the best of Ellroy.

Then I'm reading some more when Jack kills a hired assassin by cannonballing a decapitated head through the man's chest and thinking, no, no, this is more Mark Leyner, a man who has written some of the most crazy fun, politically incorrect novels since the invention of the printing press. But whoever the author's pseudonym belongs to, Jack Price is one of a kind, and this novel is one of a kind. A smart, brash carnival ride with no brakes that I truly enjoyed.

THE PRICE YOU PAY BY AIDAN TRUHEN (July 10, 2018 | Knopf Publishing Group), recommended by Pete Mock, McIntyre's Fine Books, Pittsboro, NC.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik
I had high expectations for this book, I very much enjoyed Uprooted. It definitely met those expectations. I really loved Novik's mix of fairy-tale and medieval life, turning Rumplestilskin into a female Jewish money- lender was a stroke of genius. Irina, the politically savvy, underappreciated tsarina was such a great character. This book is filled with clever women making clever plans and saving the day. I'm excited to press this one into people's hands!

SPINNING SILVER BY NAOMI NOVIK (July 10, 2018 | Del Rey Books), recommended by Chelsea Bauer, Union Ave Books, Knoxville, TN.

The Family Tabor by Cherise WolasCherise Wolas is a writer ascending to the top of her game. We were thrilled to discover The Resurrection of Joan Ashby last summer with its unfolding plot of revelations and betrayals. The Family Tabor lives in the same world, but it's both tighter and darker than her debut. Taking place over one fateful weekend for the titular family, this novel works hard to establish the inner demons, insecurities, hopes, and alliances of its characters before throwing them all together at the home of Roma and Harry--the elders of this doomed clan. Harry is receiving a "Man-of-the-Decade" honor at an evening gala, and, like with the best of Cheever, Updike, and Roth, you know from the start that darkness is going to yank at his cloak. Saying much more will ruin the novel's jaw-dropping revelation, which occurs far earlier than you'd expect. It's sufficient to say that with its trajectory toward atonement and redemption, The Family Tabor outshines even Wolas's spectacular debut.

THE FAMILY TABOR BY CHERISE WOLAS (July 17, 2018 | Flatiron Books), recommended by Steve Iwanski, Turnrow Books, Greenwood, MS.

News of a literary nature

The Same Sweet Girls Guide to Life"My life had just undergone a major sea change, and the next thing I knew, it was Christmas. After years of urban dwelling, I had moved to a South Carolina barrier island to be with a new husband, where we'd start our new life with a blended family. Although I'd fully embraced the change, everything suddenly felt strange and unfamiliar. The holidays had always been about tradition, not starting from scratch smack-dab in the midst of midlife. How did anyone even do such a thing?"

The Okra Pick(s): The fall season

Yellow Stonefly by Tim Poland

In her day job as a nurse, Sandy Holston cares for the elderly and the sick, even as she is haunted by her own questionable past and the deaths that marked it. Her true self resides among the mountain trout streams of her Appalachian home, where she wields her fly rod with uncanny accuracy as her life plays out along a tight line between herself and a fish on the other end.

But then the Ripshin River threatens to flood. Sandy can no longer deny that dementia has taken hold in James Keefe, her older sometimes-lover. An elusive eastern mountain lion appears. And when a predatory survivalist keeping a solitary camp by the headwaters arrives, he poses the biggest threat of all. His merciless pursuit of the lion brings him ever closer to Sandy, triggering her final, tragic attempt to preserve her connections with Keefe, the headwaters, and all that she has, at last, come to love.

In Yellow Stonefly—a rare fly fishing novel with a female protagonist—Tim Poland weaves suspense and introspection into an unforgettable read, at once mournful and bracing.
