What an occasion the publication of Permanent Camp marks!

Inveterate naturalist and student of the southern Appalachians, George Ellison returns to his roots as a poet after having complied an impressive array of prose works. As with many of these previous titles, such as Blue Ridge Nature Journal and Mountain Passages, Permanent Camp is made visually stunning by the accompanying watercolors and pen and ink washes of George's wife Elizabeth.

The poems included in this collection range from crystalline haiku, to longer narrative pieces that spring from epigraphs as thoughtful responses to the works of other writers who have also roamed and loved these mountains.

From the moment John Roberts, the chief justice of the United States, blundered through the Oath of Office at Barack Obama's inauguration, the relationship between the Supreme Court and the White House has been confrontational. Both men are young, brilliant, charismatic, charming, determined to change the course of the nation—and completely at odds on almost every major constitutional issue. One is radical; one essentially conservative. The surprise is that Obama is the conservative—a believer in incremental change, compromise, and pragmatism over ideology. Roberts—and his allies on the Court—seek to overturn decades of precedent: in short, to undo the ultimate victory FDR achieved in the New Deal.

This ideological war will crescendo during the 2011-2012 term, in which several landmark cases are on the Court's docket—most crucially, a challenge to Obama's controversial health-care legislation. With four new justices joining the Court in just five years, including Obama's appointees Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, this is a dramatically—and historically—different Supreme Court, playing for the highest of stakes.

No one is better positioned to chronicle this dramatic tale than Jeffrey Toobin, whose prize-winning bestseller The Nine laid bare the inner workings and conflicts of the Court in meticulous and entertaining detail. As the nation prepares to vote for President in 2012, the future of the Supreme Court will also be on the ballot.

An eloquent portrayal of post-war Vietnamese culture and philosophy through emigrants relocated to Louisiana, this collection of short stories is even more remarkable for having been written by an American who spent just two years in Vietnam gathering stories along the back alleys.

Butler dwells inside the minds of a wide range of characters – from the old man who is visited by Ho Chi Minh's ghost to the young prostitute who meets her American prince charming – with a voice so authentic it reads like a translation.

What were Albert Einstein's last words?
What was Hitler's real name?
What famous artist was mistakenly thought to be stillborn?
What sport did Fidel Castro almost play professionally in America?
These questions and more are answered in Napoleon's Hemorrhoids, a roller coaster of historical information.

Napoleon's painful hemorrhoids prevented him from mounting his horse to survey the battlefield. Hitler's father's name was actually Shicklgruber, but when his mother remarried, he took his stepfather's name--Hitler. Fidel Castro almost became a baseball player. Picasso was stillborn until his uncle revived him by blowing cigar smoke in his face. And...no one actually knows Einstein's last words. They were in German, a language his nurse did not speak.
