N. M. Kelby’s A Travel Guide for Reckless Hearts Wins Florida Book Award Gold Medal for Best General Fiction
Kelby has a long history with both Florida and Minnesota. “I arrived in Florida at the age of 10 (1967) and came to Minnesota in 1979. In the last round, we returned to Florida in 2001 and came back to Minnesota in December 2009—although we have been “reverse snowbirding” on some level for the last three years—spending extended times in Minnesota (three to six months a year)” says Kelby. Kelby and her husband own a home in Sarasota, Florida, but are currently staying in St. Paul, Minnesota. Kelby will appear at the recognition ceremony for Gold Medal Winners on March 24th at the Historical and Cultural Awards Ceremony sponsored by the State of Florida’s Division of Cultural Affairs at the R. A. Gray Building in Tallahassee. The Minnesota Book Awards will be announced on April 17th at a gala sponsored by the Friends of the St. Paul Public Library at the Crowne Plaza in downtown St. Paul. It seems fitting that N. M. Kelby’s collection of short stories rooted in the Midwest and cultivated in the Deep South should be the recipient of a Florida Book Award and nominated for a
