The Island Book Nook will reopen in mid-October under new ownership.

The new owners, Melanie and Jan Wiford, hail from Ohio and are relocating to the Fort Myers area at the end of the month. They plan to operate the book store in the same fashion as the former owner, Joan Simonds. The store has been closed since the unexpected death of Simonds.

“We look forward to reviving and carrying on the icon that Joan built,” Melanie Wiford said.

Mary Gayle Skinner will serve as store manager. The business will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is located in the Hungry Heron Plaza at 2330 Palm Ridge Road, Suite #11. The main theme of the nook is to buy and sell used paperback books...

Despite two bookstores leaving the Staunton area, Ron Ramsey felt the timing was right for opening his new bookstore at the corner of West Beverley Street and North Central Avenue.

"It largely came from watching the other bookstores close," he says. "I grew up going to The Bookstack and with Books-A-Million leaving, I just thought we need to have a bookstore downtown."

Bookworks opened Wednesday and Ramsey says he tries to carry a wide variety of new releases as well as classics...read full story

Introducing the Haunted Book Loft: Bienville Books expands PDF Print E-mail

Bienville Books opened its upstairs expansion this week, more than doubling the store's original 700-square-foot floor space into the new Haunted Book Loft. Despite some problems moving fixtures upstairs through a low doorway, as well as water damage from Hurricane Gustav, the space is now packed with horror, science fiction and fantasy, and a variety of nonfiction. Special effects like a theremin, a haunted bookshelf and a growling plant are up and running and owner Russ Adams plans more surprises in time for the upcoming SIBA convention.

Bienville Books will host an open house for SIBA attendees and selected guests on Thursday, September 25, from 6 to 9 pm. Light refreshments will be available and book afficianados will be delighted at Adams' latest find -- an approximately 200-volume section devoted solely to books. Rare and recent titles cover bibliomania, book collecting, bookbinding, paper manufacture, bookplates and just about any topic for book enthusiasts. And as usual we have a large selection of new and used books available on many topics.

The Haunted Book Loft is named in honor of a downtown Mobile landmark, the Haunted Book Shop, which sold new and used books from 1941 to 1991. An exhibit of the store's memorabilia will be installed in a showcase at the space's entrance. For photos and more information, online information is available at the store's MySpace page (bienvillebooks is the name.)

Because of Bienville Books' location near the convention site and three new downtown hotels, the store's hours have increased to 10 am to 6 pm six days a week.
