Friday, February 5th at 2pm: Reverend Mansel Philip McCleave McIntyre's is honored to have Rev. Mansel P. McCleave with us to talk about his experiences in the Woolworth Student Sit-In Movement in Greensboro. During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement, black Americans became fed up with mistreatment and sub-par living standards. Demanding equal rights and justice, the student sit-in movement in Greensboro became a vital part of blacks making strides to be treated equally. Hunger Pains in Our Heads describes the pressures leading up to that fateful day, the people involved in the event and the lasting impact after that day. Rev. Mansel P. McCleave was in the midst of these events as he was a Horticulture and Agriculture instructor at North Carolina A&T College where the students attended school. Written with both passion and intellectual depth, Rev. McCleave's book is sure to spark lively discussions, critical debates, and further analysis of those events. Rev. Mansel Philip McCleave has BA and Masters of Science degrees from North Carolina A&T College and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Friendship College in Rockville, SC. He was an instructor and maintained the Reid Plant Science Department Greenhouse at North Carolina A&T College and then went on to serve as pastor of the First Missionary Baptist Church of Siler City, North Carolina for eighteen years. He then served as Senior Pastor of the Edwards Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Liberty, North Carolina for thirty years. Rev. McCleave is still very active in church and state in his eighties. Please note that this program completes the schedule of events for Chatham County Community Read 2009: Exploring our Shared Racial History, co-sponsored by McIntyre's Books and The Friends of the Library.
