Cookbook author Elizabeth Wiegand will be on hand to discuss The Outer Banks Cookbook: Recipes and Traditions from North Carolina's Barrier Islands. Fred Thomson, in his News & Observer's "Weekend Gourmet" column, wrote about Elizabeth: "Through recipes, headnotes and interesting folklore, Wiegand brings the Outer Banks to life. Her recipes are a combination of traditional favorites passed through families and those from a new generation of chefs and restaurant owners in the region. Wiegand brings these diverse recipes together with ease." Wiegand's book includes recipes from old-timers who allowed her into their kitchens, as well as from area restaurant chefs who strive to showcase local seafood and produce on their menus, plus stories of fishing and legends of the area. As a freelance writer, Wiegand's articles have appeared in The Washington Post, Southern Living, Our State, Edible Piedmont, The Raleigh News & Observer, Relaxation, Wake Living, Fifteen501, Winston-Salem Monthly, Taste Full and other regional publications. She loves to haunt farmers' markets, ethnic markets, specialty food stores and cooking centers, and chat with chefs about their menus and food sources. She has attended cooking classes in France at LaVarenne and in the Dordogne, also at The Greenbrier and others with local NC chefs. She says "whenever I met Julia Child, we talked shoes. We were both six feet two inches tall with big feet." There will be some food samples from the book at the reading!
