Mindy Friddle, of Greenville, South Carolina, will be at the store on Saturday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m. to read from her new book, The Secret Keepers. Written with the comic warmth of Lee Smith and the magical touch of Alice Hoffman, the novel is set in a small fictional South Carolina town where a once-grand heirloom garden is covertly rescued, revealing a divided family’s secret lives. Gardening, as well as some magical plants, figure prominently in the novel. Says Friddle, “While writing Secret Keepers, I trained to become a Master Gardener. The Master Gardener program teaches volunteers to be community educators by providing science-based information on horticulture and environmentally sound gardening practices.” As part of her reading at City Lights, Friddle will bring a flowering “boot planter,” similar to that on the cover of the book as a door prize, and we’ll host a plant exchange on the back table in our Regional Books Room as part of the event.
