Fighting the Devil in Dixie: How Civil Rights Activists Took on the Ku Klux Klan in Alabama
Shortly after the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the Ku Klux Klan—determined to keep segregation as the way of life in Alabama—staged a resurgence, and the strong-armed leadership of Governor George C. Wallace, who defied the new civil rights laws, empowered the Klan’s most violent members. As Wallace’s power grew, however, blacks began fighting back in the courthouses and schoolhouses, as did young Southern lawyers like Charles “Chuck” Morgan, who became the ACLU’s Southern director; Morris Dees, who cofounded the Southern Poverty Law Center; and Bill Baxley, Alabama attorney general, who successfully prosecuted the bomber of Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and legally halted some of Wallace’s agencies designed to slow down integration. Fighting the Devil in Dixie is the first book to tell this story in full, from the Klan’s kidnappings, bombings, and murders of the 1950s to Wallace’s run for a fourth term as governor in the early 1980s, asking forgiveness and winning with the black vote.

The Gin Girl
The Gin Girl A sultry Florida adventure complete with drug dealers, a hurricane, a snake woman selling—and occasionally dispensing—venom, this first novel offers plenty of setting and surprises. Set in northern Florida, which anyone familiar with Florida knows is not of Florida, just as Florida is not of the South, we follow a barmaid returning to her island home after hearing her dead father calling in a dream, "It’s time to come home, Mary." And for her it is time, after several years of wandering America. But the tranquility of a homecoming and settling down aren’t in Mary’s cards, even though she does land a job at the bar her childhood sweetheart used to own, for she immediately becomes obsessed with learning the "facts," about this sweetheart’s murder. But facts are slippery, especially when people want to hide them. And when people sorely want to hide them, searching can become dangerous....
The Messenger of Magnolia Street
The Messenger of Magnolia Street tells the haunting story of three childhood friends who reunite to fight the unnamed presence that is slowly draining their beloved town of goodness and light. Nehemiah Trust fled his hometown of Shibboleth twelve years ago, after the death of his mother. Now chief of staff for a powerful senator, Nehemiah has washed his hands of Shibboleth. But one night his older brother Billy and childhood friend Trice appear at his front door. Something is wrong, they tell him. Nehemiah is needed back home. This mesmerizing novel of love awakened, purpose abandoned, and legacy reclaimed begins as slow and easy as a southern Sunday, but as the town of Shibboleth begins to sense the approaching darkness, the three friends must race against time to save the lifeblood of the place they call home. The solution requires a willingness to sacrifice everything. Praise for The Messenger of Magnolia Street "An inspiring tale of light versus darkness in a small Southern town conjures up the traditions of Flannery O'Connor, Harper Lee, and Peter Straub." — Tampa Tribune "This is a tale of wonder and signs. Immerse yourself in this wondrously redemptive tale." — Southern Living "In the best tradition of Stephen King and Peter Straub, Jordan creates an eerily sinister landscape in which the age-old struggle of Good versus Evil is played out within the subtle context of family, faith, and friendship. " — Booklist The Messenger of Magnolia Street is "a delight in Jordan’s deft hands. A beautifully written, atmospheric tale. — Kirkus Review
Saints In Limbo
Saints In Limbo Ever since her husband, Joe, died, Velma True's world has been limited to what she can see while clinging to one of the multicolored threads tied to the porch railing of her rural home outside Echo, Florida. Then one day a stranger appears at her door. Without knowing why, the agoraphobic widow welcomes him into her kitchen for coffee while she tells him stories of how life used to be, before her purposes were "all dried up." Just before disappearing as suddenly as he came, the man presents Velma with a special gift, one that allows her to literally step back into the past through her own memories to a place where Joe still lives and the beginning is closer than the end. While Velma is consumed with the man's gift, her son Rudy is also being presented with a challenge to his self-centered, complacent lifestyle. And a teenage girl winds her way to Echo, determined to unravel the mysteries her dead mother left behind. As secrets old and new come to light, Velma finds herself unmoored from the fears of the past and feeling her way toward freedom. One may speed read the paper, the grocery list, and the email, but not the words of River Jordan. Her stories court you to pace yourself and give them their due. It's hard to close Saints in Limbo without wondering why River Jordan isn't a household name." — Shellie Rushing Tomlinson, author of "Suck Your Stomach In and Put Some Color On" What Southern Mamas Tell Their Daughters That the Rest of Y'all Should Know Too, created and hosts All Things Southern on the TV, radio, and web. River Jordan's Saints in Limbo is a compelling story of the mysteries of existence and, especially, the mysteries of the human heart. —Ron Rash, Author of Serena "In Saints in Limbo, River Jordan's melodious writing lets you see-feel-taste the wind, and she practically sings her characters to life. An Angry Drum Echoed: Mary Musgrove, Queen of the Creeks
As Pocahontas was to Jamestown and Sacajawea was to the Lewis and Clark expedition, so was Mary Musgrove to the burgeoning Georgia colony.

Born “Coosaponakeesa” to a Creek mother and an English father, she skillfully straddled two worlds: her Indian heritage and the English way of life. Through her influence with the Indian tribes, Mary encouraged the chiefs to meet with General Oglethorpe in Savannah, leading to the peaceful establishment of an English colony in Indian territory.

Although she won the esteem of the English settlers, she eventually became a thorn in the side of the newly formed colonial government. After ten years without pay for her diplomatic and interpretive services, she led her Creek tribesmen in a relentless march through the streets of Savannah to demand justice.

Splendid Isolation: The Jekyll Island Millionaires' Club 1888-1942
Untamed, and virtually unchanged since its discovery in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe, Jekyll Island’s history unfolds with the excitement and suspense of a fairy tale.

Because so many of the world’s greatest minds and bank accounts gathered together in virtual isolation for three months each year, history was made on Jekyll Island. A group of tycoons with surnames such as Rockefeller, Morgan, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer, Baker and others formed their exclusive Millionaires’ Club on this island hideaway—the richest and most inaccessible club of that time.

Between 1888 and 1942, Jekyll Island was open only to Club members’ families and their guests for hunting, relaxing and playing in luxurious ease. In this sweeping historical saga, you will discover the Millionaires’ joys, tribulations, and deeply guarded secrets—told through the unique voices of four Club employees. In this true story of the island getaway that offered them sovereignty, discover how the decisions of these powerful men changed the face of world finances, business and politics as they built modern America.

The richest people in the world, through the eyes of the people whose paychecks they sign. Splendid Isolation: The Jekyll Island Millionaire's Club 1888-1942 tells the tale of four employees of an exclusive club of Jekyll's island, a Millionaire's club filled with names such as Morgan, Pulitzer, Vanderbilt, among many others. This island became so exclusive that it may have almost became a nation of its own. Splendid Isolation is a fine choice and intriguing reading using the characters of the great tycoons of a century ago. Midwest Book Review

Jekyll Island is a small islet off the coast of Georgia, which between the years 1888 and 1942 was the site of an exclusive club and resort of America's wealthiest and powerful men. While Splendid Isolation could be the standard tale of princes and leisure, Mueller opens the history of this island by using employees of the grounds to narrate the tale of the rise and fall of the resort. A native of Georgia, Mueller's love for the state, its culture, and its peoples shine through and her easy, unrushed tone is soothing. She also proves that the men and women who populated the isolated retreat were more than their wealth: for example, the United States' Federal Reserve had its roots in secret meetings held on the island between members. Another plus is the description of the stunning scenery and wildlife preserved on the island. Though the fictionalized narrative form may make Splendid Isolation appear a bit trivial beside other non-fiction works on the island, Mueller's enthusiasm for Georgia history is infectious, and the book is an excellent purchase for those interested in the Gilded Age and in Georgia.
This lyrical, Southern novel weaves mystical elements with tangible touches of God's redemptive grace to reveal a pattern of irresistible hope. Praise for Saints in Limbo "A Southern Gothic Masterpiece." Paste Magazine review - May/June 2009 "Saints In Limbo brims with truth and insists on hope. River Jordan has written a lyrical and relentlessly beautiful book." Connie May Fowler, author of The Problem with Murmur Lee, Before Women Had Wings, and others "River Jordan's words flat out sing. You will hold on to this book and treasure it and flip though the pages like fire. Saints in Limbo is a triumph of the spirit and a reminder that there's much more to life than meets the eye. Read this book to remind yourself that heaven can be found right here, right now. " —Nicole Seitz, author of A Hundred Years Of Happiness, Trouble The Water, And The Spirit Of Sweetgrass "Mystical and magically written, Saints In Limbo, is a beautiful novel from start to finish. Fans of River Jordan will be thrilled with this latest work." —Michael Morris, author of A Place Called Wiregrass, Slow Way Home "River Jordan's written words are as poetic and enchanting as her name, and her story Saints in Limbo, is as powerful and healing as the River Jordan itself." —Denise Hildreth, author of Flies on the Butter,

Marshall Chapman knows Nashville. A musician, songwriter, and author with nearly a dozen albums and a bestselling memoir under her belt, Chapman has lived and breathed Music City for over forty years. Her friendships with those who helped make Nashville one of the major forces in American music culture is unsurpassed. And in her new book, They Came to Nashville, the reader is invited to see Marshall Chapman as never before--as music journalist extraordinaire. In They Came to Nashville, Chapman records the personal stories of musicians shaping the modern history of music in Nashville, from the mouths of the musicians themselves. The trials, tribulations, and evolution of Music City are on display, as she sits down with influential figures like Kris Kristofferson, Emmylou Harris, and Miranda Lambert, and a dozen other top names, to record what brought each of them to Nashville and what inspired them to persevere. The book culminates in a hilarious and heroic attempt to find enough free time with Willie Nelson to get a proper interview. Instead, she's brought along on his raucous 2008 tour and winds up onstage in Beaumont, Texas singing "Good-Hearted Woman" with Willie. They Came to Nashville reveals the daily struggle facing newcomers to the music business, and the promise awaiting those willing to fight for the dream.
Goodbye, Little Rock and Roller
Legendary country and rock singer/songwriter Chapman has seen many of her more than 250 songs ("Betty's Bein' Bad," "The Perfect Partner") made famous by other artists like Jimmy Buffett, while her own recording career never went beyond cult status. Awake in the World:108 Practices to Live a Divinely Inspired Life
Like Elizabeth Gilbert’s journey to write Eat, Love, Pray, Awake in the World grew from a series of wake up calls that brought the author to set out on a journey of Self-discovery. The wisdom practices she gleaned from her travels across the globe are gathered in 108 concise ways to integrate the spiritual intimately into everyday life. From walking labyrinths to learning the language of the soul and deepening mindfulness practices, this book is a good companion to take along for the journey. What people are saying: "Debra Moffitt has gathered wisdom from the world's great spiritual traditions and presents us with a series of clear, eloquently articulated practices that don't conflict with but rather enhance the material of daily life: trips to the grocery store, a busy day at work, the common conflicts and worries of contemporary existence. She speaks with the authority of one who has been through a crisis of faith, searched for wholeness, and still strives to integrate the spiritual and the mundane, the sacred and the profane, so that any moment can be an occasion for growth and reflection." -- Jennifer Horne, Editor, All Out of Faith: Southern Women on Spirituality, University of Alabama Press 2006 and 2010.

They Came to Nashville
This wild and woolly memoir deserves to gain her a much wider audience than just her loyal fans. Structured as a series of essays about 12 of her songs "that have the best stories around them," this is a hilarious and entertaining look at life.... (Publishers Weekly)

When Ties Break/A Memoir about How to Thrieve After Loss
This is the true story of my life. It is a story of emotional and physical abuse, loss and pain, the struggle to find myself and to understand God. It is a story of survival and rebirth, and it is my hope it will be an inspiration to those who are discouraged, desperate to find their way, or whose faith in God has grown weak.

With vivid characters and lush language, readers will find themselves thinking of Augusta Trobaugh's Resting in the Bosom of the Lamb.

The Miracle of Mercy Land
What if you had the power to amend choices you made in the past? Would you do it even if it changed everything? Mercy Land has made some unexpected choices for a young woman in the 1930s. The sheltered daughter of a traveling preacher, she chooses to leave her rural community to move to nearby Bay City on the warm, gulf-waters of southern Alabama. There she finds a job at the local paper and spends seven years making herself indispensible to old Doc Philips, the publisher and editor. Then she gets a frantic call at dawn—it’s the biggest news story of her life, and she can’t print a word of it. Doc has come into possession of a curious book that maps the lives of everyone in Bay City—decisions they’ve made in the past, and how those choices affect the future. Mercy and Doc are consumed by the mystery locked between the pages—Doc because he hopes to right a very old wrong, and Mercy because she wants to fulfill the book’s strange purpose. But when a mystery from Mercy’s past arrives by train, she begins to understand that she will have to make choices that will deeply affect everyone she loves—forever.
